2014, Seminars in Diagnostic PathologyCitation Excerpt :Destructive invasion of other structures is diagnostic of mesothelioma. Desmin reactivity and negativity for EMA and p53 are also in favor of a reactive process over mesothelioma,292 but exceptions do occur.293 Rhabdomyoma of the paratestis is much less common than rhabdomyosarcomas (see below), but two occurred in the spermatic cord of infants,294,295 two in the epididymis, one in the tunica vaginalis, and two in the paratestis (not further specified) of 17–19-year olds.296–298
Immunohistochemistry: Applications to the evaluation of lung and pleural neoplasms: Part 2
2012, ChestCitation Excerpt :D2-40 shows promise for assisting in differentiating between sarcomatoid mesothelioma and carcinoma; a recent study revealed higher frequencies of staining in sarcomatoid mesotheliomas (86.7%) than in pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinomas (25.9%).65 Sarcomatoid mesothelioma may also display aberrant staining for mesenchymal markers such as smooth muscle actin in up to 60% of cases, leading to a potential misdiagnosis of leiomyosarcoma if CK stains are not performed.62,66 As mentioned earlier, some sarcomas also occasionally demonstrate staining for CK, particularly synovial sarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, and angiosarcoma, potentially leading to a misdiagnosis of mesothelioma.
