2011, International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental HealthCitation Excerpt :Substantial evidence implicates high-risk HPV infection in cervix, anal, head and neck cancer (Bouvard et al., 2009; Gillison et al., 2000; IARC, 2009; Ringstrom et al., 2002; Ritchie et al., 2003). Squamous cell carcinoma is in esophageal tissue, however, the relation between HPV infection and EC remains controversial (Kamangar et al., 2006; Dreilich et al., 2006; Poljak et al., 1998). In our study, infection with HPV, particularly high-risk HPV-16, was more common in EC tissues and tissues adjacent to the cancer than in esophageal tissue from non-cancer control subjects.
