Oral inverted ductal papilloma

Abstract

A case of oral inverted ductal papilloma that appeared on the lower lip of a 44-year-old man is described. A literature review and discussion of the histopathologic features and histogenesis of this uncommon lesion of minor salivary gland origin are also presented.

    However, oral IDP is a distinctive lesion with histological features similar to those of the more common sinonasal inverted papilloma [4]. In contrast to sinonasal inverted papilloma, which arises from the surface epithelium, oral IDP arises almost exclusively at the junction of the minor salivary gland duct and the oral mucosal surface epithelium [1,4]. Sinonasal inverted papillomas are associated with squamous cell carcinoma in 10–15% of the cases, while oral IDPs are benign [4,10].

    Only one case has been reported in a major salivary gland,12 but we do not believe it fulfills the histologic criteria set forth by White et al8 and Ellis and Auclair.1 Ellis and Auclair13 reviewed the literature8,10,14-17 and added 4 cases from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) Registry for a total of 17 cases. There was no gender predilection, and the age range was 32 to 66 years, with a mean of 50 years.
