Allergic rhinitis is an immune-mediated disease in which mast cells and basophils initially respond to the triggering stimulus by inducing degranulation and release of inflammation mediators such as histamine after an antigen antibody reaction with IgE. Further on other cytokines are released, such as IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-alpha, GM-CSF, RANTES, eotaxins, and PAF (platelet-activating factor) to maintain the inflammatory process.1–9 From the clinical standpoint, allergic rhinitis can be categorized into four subgroups (mild intermittent, moderate/severe intermittent, mild persistent, moderate/severe persistent)1.

2007, American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery
      Citation Excerpt :

We found, however, that the incidence of AR was approximately the same in the OME and control groups, suggesting an absence of direct association between AR and OME. Many inflammatory diseases, including asthma, AR, atopic dermatitis, idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome, and intestinal inflammatory diseases, are associated with eosinophilia [16]. Although the primary function of eosinophils is the elimination of invading parasites, if these cells are activated in the absence of parasitic infection, they may destroy tissues or induce inflammation [17,18].
