2018, Human PathologyCitation Excerpt :However, an important fact that has been largely ignored or overlooked, mainly by those who support the histological classification as a predictor of outcome, is tumor sampling, an issue that was raised more than a decade ago [2]. With regard to the staging system of thymomas, recognizing that there are several proposed in the literature [25-30], the one that has been most widely adopted is that proposed by Masaoka et al [31] and modified by Koga et al [32], despite the fact that the system poses some problems regarding its application and that some even have called for a new system [33,34]. In the meta-analysis conducted by Gupta et al [34], the authors noted a lack of statistically significant differences between Masaoka stages I and II, suggesting that those staging categories may not provide significant clinical value.
