Will histopathology survive in Pakistan? This is a question we have been forced to ask ourselves due to the disturbing events of the past few months.1 Since the general elections in February 2008 and induction of a civilian elected government, there has been a significant escalation in the war against terror being fought in Pakistan’s tribal areas, and the activities of militants have spread to the settled districts. Pakistanis themselves have suffered the most. The astronomical increase in international oil prices early in 2008 catastrophically upset the balance of payment for Pakistan, placing a terrible burden on Pakistan’s economy, already tottering on the edge of an abyss due to the war on terror and resultant law and order breakdown and political instability, with a real danger that Pakistan may default on its foreign loan payments.
