    Abstract

The infectivity titre of two strains of Herpesvirus hominis was reduced by not more than six log10 units by 90 minutes' exposure to chlorhexidine at a final concentration of 0·02% at room temperature. Under identical conditions the compound was ineffective against a vaccine strain of poliovirus and against an adenovirus. Experimental conditions are described whereby the toxic effect of the disinfectant on the tissue culture assay systems are minimized.
