T1 Liver aspiration in the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma in the Gambia.

AB Fine needle aspiration was used for the cytological diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma in 151 Gambian patients. Of 133 with hepatic tumours a correct positive cytological diagnosis was obtained in 116 (87.2%). This simple test was a safe and accurate diagnostic procedure. It is particularly suitable for use in countries where medical resources are limited and hepatocellular carcinoma is prevalent.
