The summaries are mere guidelines and personal opinions of the two authors. The articles selected are diverse but occasionally reflect the authors’ bias and are from the more widely read pathology journals. It is not intended to be an assiduous search of every publication in every Pathology journal, but more of a general indication of some of the monthly highlights through the eyes of the authors.Hopefully, these snippets will provide the reader with enough to glean some facts and tips, as well as encourage them to read the entire article if necessary. We start this feature with Histopathology (diagnostic surgical pathology) highlights.Korching E, Jeffrey SS, Meinerz W, et al. Basal cell carcinoma of the breast revisited: an old entity with new interpretations. J Clin Pathol 2008;61:553–60.A good overview of this category of breast cancer that expresses high MW keratins (CK5, 14 and 17) and includes high grade cancers that are so-called triple-negative cancers. It is worth remembering that examples of metaplastic, medullary and myoepithelial carcinomas also fall within this remit. Physiological progenitor cells in the breast share immunohistochemical features with basal-like cancers.Lambie DLJ, Brown IS. Multinucleate epithelial change in colorectal hyperplastic polyps: a review of 27 cases. J Clin Pathol 2008;61:611–4.We have all encountered isolated multinucleated epithelial change occasionally in colonic biopsy material. This study explores these cells in hyperplastic polyps and shows them to be CMV/herpes negative. The authors contend that associated inflammation and apoptosis along with pro-inflammatory properties of NaPO4 bowel preparatory solutions may play a role in the pathogenesis of these cells.Mahler-Araujo B, Savage K, Parry S, et al.
