The summaries are mere guidelines and personal opinions of the two authors. The articles selected are diverse but occasionally reflect the authors' bias and are from the more widely read pathology journals. It is not intended to be an assiduous search of every publication in every Pathology journal, but more of a general indication of some of the monthly highlights through the eyes of the authors.Hopefully, these snippets will provide the reader with enough to glean some facts and tips, as well as encourage them to read the entire article if necessary.November 2009Menon MP, Khan A. Micro-RNAs in thyroid neoplasms: molecular, diagnostic and therapeutic implications. Use of an elastic stain to show venous invasion in colorectal carcinoma: a simple technique for detection of an important prognostic factor. J Clin Pathol 2009;62:1021–5.The authors used a Movat stain to detect venous invasion, and a staggeringly high 44% of cases that were previously called negative for venous invasion were now positive. Furthermore, only one Movat-stained section was enough to detect venous invasion; multiple stained sections obviously increased the chances of finding invasion. The H&E clues that venous invasion may be present and therefore an elastic stain should be performed were: the ‘unaccompanied artery’ sign, where large arteries were seen without an accompanying vein; and the ‘protruding tongue’ sign, where smooth tongues of tumour extended into pericolic/rectal fat.
