It consists of 19 exons. Although it does not bind directly to DNA, it acts as a repressor of several signalling pathways via transcription factors. TLE1 protein has several physiological roles in embryogenesis, haematopoiesis, general differentiation, and both neuronal and eye development. Much attention was focused on its expression in the tumour cell nuclei of synovial sarcoma (SS). However, several other soft tissue tumours that do and do not share morphological similarity with SS also display nuclear immunoreactivity for TLE1; hence, caution in interpretation is advocated.
