MMP-7 promotes tumor progression by inhibiting the apoptosis of cancer cells [53], reducing cell adhesion [54], and inducing angiogenesis [32]. Thus, MMP-7 can function as an oncogenic protein that regulates the occurrence and development of various tumors.

It has been reported that MMP-7 proteolytically processes several cell surface proteins, such as Fas-ligand (15), pro-tumor necrosis factor (16), syndecan-1 (7), E-cadherin (17), Notch-1 (18), and β4 integrin (30). Interestingly, all cell surface proteins are constitutively or partially localized in rafts (31–36).
