Pulmonary oncocytes in prolonged hyperoxia

Abstract

Continuous exposure of newborn mice to 100% oxygen resulted in the appearance of oncocytes in the lungs of the experimental animals. These oncocytes, which were present in the epithelial lining of the conductive as well as the transitional airways, may be the morphologic expression of an accentuated type of compensatory mitochondrial hypertrophy caused by the need for, or exhaustion of one or more of the mitochondrial enzymes secondary to the hyperoxia. The functional significance of these cells and their possible relationship to pulmonary oncocytomas are discussed.
