Bone muscle interactions and vitamin D
2015, BoneCitation Excerpt :Vitamin D may regulate responses to muscle injury and regeneration. Serum 25D levels drop directly following muscle injury, which may partly be due to the fall in vitamin D binding protein after trauma [64]. Baseline levels correlate directly with muscle recovery [65].
Calculated free and bioavailable vitamin D metabolite concentrations in vitamin D-deficient hip fracture patients after supplementation with cholecalciferol and ergocalciferol
2013, BoneCitation Excerpt :Apart from its function as the main specific serum transport protein for vitamin D metabolites, DBP also has roles in immunomodulation, inflammation, and the acute response to tissue injury [26]. It is likely that the DBP concentrations of our study participants decreased following traumatic hip fracture, [26,27] and the observed increase in both DBP and albumin in both treatment groups over the course of the study reflects recovery from injury, rather than a specific calciferol-mediated effect. This is supported by the significant positive association between the on-treatment changes in DBP and changes in albumin (r = 0.56, p < 0.001; data not shown).
