Epidemiology and management of breast carcinoma in Egyptian males: Experience of a single Cancer Institute
2011, Journal of the Egyptian National Cancer InstituteCitation Excerpt :Also males with breast carcinoma require proper psychological support [6,15]. Although open biopsy was considered the gold standard for the evaluation of BCM, nowadays the non-operative evaluation of breast masses in BCM can employ either cytology (FNA) or core biopsy, depending on different institutions experience [24]. In our study, pathological diagnosis by open biopsy was done in 22 cases of which 15 cases were already done outside our institute which is considered a tertiary center in Egypt.

2007, Mayo Clinic ProceedingsCitation Excerpt :They also recommended that mammography not be considered a necessary procedure in most of these patients but should be reserved for situations of clinical suspicion. In addition, Vetto et al2 suggested that mammography did not provide much more additional information than did clinical evaluation, which, in their study, included physical examination and fine-needle aspiration. Similarly, Borgen et al3 considered mammography less useful in men than in women because of men's small breast size.
Is mammography overused in male patients?
2006, BreastApproach to the patient with gynecomastia
2011, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and MetabolismCitation Excerpt :Several parts of the evaluation process remain controversial. Some authors have recommended performing mammography and/or breast ultrasound in all cases (50–52); in agreement with others (24, 53–58), my own practice has been to use these imaging tools only when there are physical findings that raise a suspicion of breast cancer or a BRCA-2 mutation is suspected or known to be present. Although the sensitivity and specificity of mammography are both greater than 90% in the diagnosis of male breast cancer, the much higher prevalence of gynecomastia compared with breast cancer leads to a positive predictive value of only 55% (59).
