Population-based primary HPV mRNA cervical screening compared with cytology screening
2019, Preventive MedicineCitation Excerpt :HPV testing as a means to improve screening for cervical cancer was suggested already in the 1980s (Baker et al., 1987; Jenkins et al., 1996). Primary HPV screening has been shown to be more sensitive to detect high grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2+) and more efficient than cytology for prevention of cervical cancer, but it has a lower specificity (Cuzick et al., 2006; Cuzick et al., 1995; Bulkmans et al., 2007; Castle et al., 2011; Arbyn et al., 2012; Ronco et al., 2014; Wright et al., 2015). However, mRNA based methods seem to have higher specificity than DNA based methods (Arbyn et al., 2015; Haedicke and Iftner, 2016).
