Sebocytes contribute to melasma onset
2022, iScienceCitation Excerpt :SGs express several hormonal receptors including the melanocortin receptors, 1 (MC-1R) and MC-5R (Bohm et al., 2002), and secrete several cytokines, hormones, and vitamins that modulate the morphology and functions of skin cells including melanocytes. Body regions rich in sebocytes, such as the face, axillae, and genitalia, exhibit the highest melanocyte density and pigmentation level (Bolognia and Pawelek 1988). Moreover, the coculture of the human SG cell line SZ95 and melanocytes promotes melanocyte proliferation and dendricity (Abdel-Naser et al., 2012); in addition, UV-oxidized skin surface lipids, particularly squalene, induce melanocyte proliferation and melanin synthesis in organ tissue cultures (Picardo et al., 1991).

However, it could be similar to hypopigmented macules in TSC that, histopathologically, show a decrease in epidermal melanin content and melanosomes number.9 Piebaldism is a rare genetic disease characterized by congenital absence of melanocytes in affected areas of skin and hair, whereas eye or ear melanocytes are rarely affected.1,12-15
