Homology and concerted evolution at the α1 and α2 loci of human α-globin

Abstract

The identical structure of two racially distinct α1-globin alleles and the high degree of homology between the α1- and α2-globin loci indicate that mechanisms exist for suppression of allelic polymorphisms and for exchange of genetic information within the α-globin gene complex.
