Material and methods
A retrospective chart review of patients with psammoma bodies that were found incidentally on an EB specimen over an 18-month period was performed. Data were abstracted from the medical records of these patients. The compiled data included age, the status of hormone replacement therapy, the recent cervicovaginal smear result, the extent of diagnostic evaluation, and the findings of these evaluations.

A total of 2269 endometrial biopsies were performed in 2063 women. Eleven women were identified as having psammoma bodies on EB, an estimated prevalence of 0.48%. One additional woman had psammoma bodies on a DC specimen, and the endometrial pathologic findings revealed chronic endometritis. This woman was excluded from further analysis because the focus of this review was to address psammoma bodies found on EB. The presence of psammoma bodies on cervicovaginal smears and endometrial biopsy specimens is rare. The only published data regarding prevalence involves women with psammoma bodies that were noted on cervicovaginal smears, with a prevalence of 7 per 234,000 smears.5 The present report is the largest to date regarding the incidental finding of psammoma bodies on endometrial sampling.
