Alpha-fetoprotein-producing adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon with possible hepatoid differentiation

Summary

A patient with adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon producing alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is described. Hepatoid differentiation is suggested by the morphological appearance and production of hepatic-type AFP. The possible histogenesis of such a tumor is discussed.

    Considering the entire intestine, the most common location of HT is certainly represented by the colon-rectum. The first case was reported in 1995 by a study describing an adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon with hepatoid differentiation [28]. After this, about 50 cases have been reported, with the largest series of colorectal HT including 31 cases [26].
