Aetiological parallel between tonsillar and anogenital squamous-cell carcinomas

Lancet. 1999 Oct 23;354(9188):1442-3. doi: 10.1016/S0140-6736(99)92824-6.

Abstract

Patients with human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated anogenital cancers had a 4.3-fold increased risk of tonsillar squamous-cell carcinoma. These cancer types also have histopathological and molecular biological similarities. Thus HPV may be aetiologically important in tonsillar carcinogenesis.
